I’ve been making inspirational gluten free mid-week meals for the family! It’s all thanks to the Simply Cook recipe boxes. Anyone would think I’d spent hours chopping and blending spices…
It all began when a work colleague started bringing in delicious smelling homemade lunches.
He mentioned that he was receiving recipe kits from Simply Cook to make his dishes. I was interested to know more as I do like to cook new and varied meals. Quite often, I’m put off by a long list of ingredients and the thought of trawling through supermarket shelves for obscure oils and spices. Especially when I don’t know if I’ll be able to use the ingredients again in other recipes.
I had lots of questions. Being able to ask someone about their experience is always useful rather than relying on the sales pitch of the vendor.
He walked me through some of the options on the app on his phone, including how I could set my profile to Gluten Free! How cool is that?
Each monthly pack was letter box sized and came with four meal kits. Within each kit, all the relevant spices and pastes are provided. There’s also instructions on how to make the meal and a little tear off shopping list to remember the ingredients you need to buy. There seems to have been a lot of thought gone into the user experience.
Despite the fact that I don’t like signing up for monthly subscriptions, it didn’t take long for me to be convinced that this was worth trying!
So I looked through their website and set up my account and selected the four recipes for my first kit. The website wasn’t great on some Internet browsers (at the time I signed up) but I’ve downloaded their app on my phone. The app is very simple to use. It has a clean feel and it’s all I use now instead of their website (some screenshots below).

When selecting and cooking recipes, you can also check the reviews for each recipe. This is a particularly useful tool when looking at recipes I’ve never heard of.
So far I’ve made:
- Penne alla Rustica – Rich and creamy. The only adjustment I had to make was to use gluten free pasta.
- BBQ Tandoori Chicken- an easy win with the whole family.
- Thai Basil Pork – Interesting combination of flavours.
- Jambalaya – never tried this before but I will definitely be making it again.
- Chicken Makhani – A rich creamy chicken curry.
- Nyonya – Similar taste to a Thai green curry.

All I had to do in the shop was open the app to see the ingredients I needed to buy.

Here’s my pros and cons:
Pros:
- Try four different dishes each month.
- Let them send you a selection each month or pick your own meal kits
- Choose the pack size to serve two or four people.
- Select allergens to avoid.
- Choice of how often you want to receive a recipe kit.
- Put subscription on hold.
- Very good app. View your current order and what you’ve made before.
- Check your app for the shopping list when you forget to make a shopping list.
- Pack is made to fit through a standard letter box!
- See reviews from people who have tried the recipe
Cons
- Website has issues but not a problem once I signed up as I can do everything on the app.
- I found some recipes can take longer than the stated time once you add in preparation time eg chopping meat.
