I’ve been reviewing lots of gluten free cookbooks recently as my sister has asked for one as her birthday present. Despite all the recipes that can be found on the wonderful web, there’s nothing quite like having a proper cookbook in your hands is there?
I decided to put all my research into a blog post as I’m going to point my Secret Santa in this direction! Hopefully, you will find it a useful list too if you’re looking to get any gluten free cookbooks for yourself or a gluten free friend/family member.
For the books listed here, I only looked at those which had 100% gluten free recipes and had at least 4.5 stars on Amazon reviews.
Hassle Free, Gluten Free: Over 100 delicious, gluten-free family recipes.
- Written by Jane Devonshire, the 2016 MasterChef winner. When her son was diagnosed as coeliac, she was determined that all the family should be able to eat the same meal. These recipes are tried and tested in her household.
- Published in association with Coeliac UK, celebrating their 50th anniversary
- Contains over 100 recipes
- I downloaded a free sample which included recipes for cheese straws, spiced almonds, scotch eggs and tempura veg.
- Easy to follow steps
- Love the preamble which introduces each recipe with suggestions of when Jane might make it
NOSH Gluten-Free
- Recipes use spoons and a mug for measurement
- Easy to follow recipes with pictures
- I liked the chapter headings such as Quick and Easy, Friends Around and Pop it in the Oven
- The introduction includes tips on dealing with gluten free pasta and a suggested list of store cupboard staples for making the meals in the book
Free-From Food for Family and Friends
- Contains over 100 recipes
- The recipes are all entirely free from wheat, yeast, egg, dairy and gluten, and almost all entirely free from nuts
- Chapters include Elevenses, Alfresco, Lazy Afternoons, Weeknight Food and Proper Puddings
Hamlyn All Colour Cookery: 200 Gluten-Free Recipes: Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook
- Contains over 200 recipes
- Easy to follow steps with colour pictures for each recipe
- I have this book myself and can confirm it has a wide range of dishes including kedgeree, breakfast bars, fritters, scones, oven bakes, tagine, fish pie and Thai coconut chicken. I’ve struggled to get gluten free sushi which my son is missing so I looking forward to making the sushi triangles in this book.
Serve To Win
- Written by Grand Slam winning tennis champion Novak Djokovic
- He reveals how eliminating wheat transformed his health
- I especially like that this provides a 14-Day Gluten-free Plan with weekly menus. A book full of recipes is great but without the planning bit, you just never get round to making them.
- Quite a few reviews also suggest that it is in itself a great read
Phil Vickery’s Essential Gluten Free
- Contains 175 recipes from around the world
- Detailed explanation about different flours and suggested flour blends for different purposes. May not be your cup of tea if the idea of buying different flours to mix together seems too long winded.
- On the other hand, specifically mixed flours will probably create better results than an all-purpose gluten free flour…
Deliciously Ella Every Day
- Contains 100 recipes
- Recipes are plant-based, dairy-free and gluten-free
- Beautiful photos
- Chapters include Big Batch Cooking, Easy Weekday Dinners and Healthy Eating on the Go
River Cottage Gluten Free
- Contains 120 recipes
- Includes a section on fermenting which is seen as very important for gut health
- Plenty of options are covered in the breakfast recipes and the chapter on bread includes sourdough, baguette, focaccia and flatbread. There’s a chapter for Pudding and a separate chapter for Teatime!
The Gluten-free Cookbook
- Contains over 230 recipes
- Includes some categories I haven’t seen in the other books such as Starters, Party Food and Dips; Pasta, Noodles and Rice; Savoury Tarts and Pies
- Starts off with a Going Gluten Free section that delves into the evolution of wheat as well as advise on food preparation, foods to check and eating out.
Mindful Chef
- Contains 70 recipes
- From the founders of Mindful Chef, a recipe box service
- Each meal can be made in 30 minutes and has a maximum of 10 ingredients
- All recipes are gluten-free and contain no refined carbs or sugars
Gluten-Free Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day
- This one is an extra I had to add in for anyone really missing decent bread
- There are 90 recipes
- The authors apply their revolutionary stored-dough method to yeasted and unleavened breads made without wheat, barley, or rye
- Lots of instructional black and white photos and 40 colour photos
