This is my first restaurant review on my blog….I hope it’s helpful to anyone visiting
Birmingham (in the UK). Two days ago, I went for a meal at the Cosy Club with eight work colleagues. I’d asked my team to ensure that the chosen restaurant could cater for gluten free requirements…and after a team vote, Cosy Club was the final choice.
I have to say, I think it was a great choice! There were three main meals on the menu that were served gluten free and my main problem was deciding what to have. This is a nice problem to have when you are a coeliac.
We were seated upstairs on the mezzanine, overlooking the crowded bar below. It was the after work crowd on a Friday. It also allowed us to take in the Corinthian style of the building, built in 1830.
We were selecting from their Christmas and New Years menu which was £27.95 per person to include a starter, main and dessert. Starters came as a sharing platter but once I notified them that I needed the gluten free options, I was provided with my own starter plate to avoid contamination. This consisted of three Halloumi and Sweetcorn Bites, Mushroom Tarragon and Chestnut Pate and gluten free bread cut into strips. It was all tasty though the pate was too chilled; room temperature would have been better.
For mains, I decided last minute to order the Confit Duck leg rather than the sea bass or pork belly (both of which were also gluten free). This was served with dauphinoise potatoes, braised red cabbage, roasted plum, watercress and a red wine gravy. It was as filling as it sounds.
Completely stuffed, I was presented with my chosen dessert: a Chocolate Brownie & Cinder Toffee Trifle. Again, it was surprising but pleasing to see that four of the desserts were or could be made gluten free. They weren’t ice cream or fruit options either, but proper desserts.
Another bonus….the staff were all very attentive and friendly. I’ll definitely be visiting again. On that note, has anyone tried their regular menu? Please use the Comment link to share any recommendations from their gluten free options.
