Gluten free landside at Birmingham Airport

Guess who had to drop family off at Birmingham Airport this morning? I work near the airport so I was the obvious candidate to do the taxi run.
Normally I’m asleep at 5.45am but today I’d just filled the car boot with an assortment of luggage and started up the car.

For doing this good deed, I decided that I’d treat myself to breakfast at the airport before going in to the office (2 hours earlier than usual).

What I really fancied was a hot panini or a breakfast roll…one can still dream right?

I browsed the range at Costa Coffee but there was not even a cold sandwich available. I know they do a small line in gluten free but this particular outlet had either run out or didn’t stock them. There was a breakfast pot which stated it could be contaminated with gluten. Now if you’ve just chosen to follow a gluten free diet and/or can withstand some minor gluten infiltration in your diet, then this is probably OK. As a coeliac I stay away from these labels unless things get desperate!

I walked away a little disappointed but not completely disheartened. I knew there was a Cafe Nero further down the departures hall…

They also had a breakfast pot (sausage, bacon and egg). Unfortunately it wasn’t gluten free.

Still determined to track down breakfast , I went upstairs and headed for Frankie & Benny’s opposite security. Success! Breakfast doesn’t feature on their gluten free menu but I was offered the three egg omelette (without the cubed potatoes). I opted for extras of cheese and mushrooms.

Upon doing some research this evening, it looks like there is also an All Bar One and a Wrapchic landside at the airport…I missed these so I’ll have to comment on them in the future. I’m particularly interested to know All Bar Ones offering as they tend to be in a lot of UK airports.
