Planning a Gluten Free Break to Spain

In just over a weeks time, I’ll be flying out to the Spanish Costa Dorada for a long weekend.

It’s time to lay out the gluten free survival plan! Well…at least a gluten free holiday checklist to check I’ve covered all bases. You can download a copy here: https://glutenfreesurvival.co.uk/wp-admin/post.php?post=409&action=edit

Luckily, the hotel I’m staying in is part of the H10 group. I’ve stayed there before and they have happily been able and willing to provide gluten free options…so I have high expectations. However, I will drop them an email today to advise that two of our party require gluten free meals.

We’ve gone with the half board option which includes breakfast and dinner.

They’ve previously provided gluten free bread at breakfast so I won’t need to pack any loaves of bread.

Our main challenges will come at lunch time. We’re planning day trips to Barcelona, Sitges and PortAventura theme park as well as spending a day in Salou.

I know the key phrase to look out for is Sin Gluten which means without gluten. However, I will be taking a gluten free translation card in Spanish with me. Well, actually, I have a pocket sized guide called Multi Lingual Phrase Passport which covers French, German, Italian and Spanish phrases.

I’ve just been online to search for gluten free restaurants in Salou to find reviews and recommendations.

Interestingly, I found a search page on the Schar website. Here I searched for restaurants in Salou. It came back with a list of eateries in Salou and surrounding towns. The downside was that the reviews I looked at were all several years old so I can’t be sure if I’ll still find these places and how their management and menus will have changed.

The Culture Trip also has a good list of restaurants in Barcelona that provide gluten free options. It’s a shame I’m only there for one day of my trip as I feel like I would have been well catered for.

Let me know if you have any recommendations for any of my destinations: Barcelona, Sitges, Salou and PortAventura park.
